What is HereToo - WWU?
The HereToo Project is a national project in collaboration with Tectonic Theatre Project in an effort to amplify the voices of young activists as they work tirelessly to enact change in their communities and on a national scale through devising and interview-based verbatim theatre.
HereToo - WWU was the west coast and eventual national premiere of a fully-realized play in the HereToo Project.
We combined interviews that had already been compiled by leaders in the HereToo Project with our own local and personal connections in our own Bellingham and Pacific Northwest community as well as our own research to create the play that would eventually kick off the national project.
Our process began in May of 2019 with a three-day workshop led by two members of Tectonic Theatre Project (Barbara Pitts McAdams and Jimmy Maize where we learned about the method we would be using to create this piece as well as began to create content that would be used later.
-
This was then followed by a two-week intensive in August as a part of Western Washington University's summer program Western Summer Theatre, where a first draft was researched, written, and performed as a workshop production at the end of the month.
-
This first draft was re-worked and refined before being fully staged and performed as part of Western's mainstage season at the end of October, including a 'Day of Action' organized by the company to help students on campus register to vote and write letters to their senators and representatives. From this performance, the production was chosen to travel to the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (KCACTF) in Fort Collins, CO in February.
-
In preparation to travel with the show, the company put on an additional performance at Bellingham High School on February 9th, free to students of High School age and under to help spread our message.
-
Finally, at the end of February 2020 after nearly 10 months of work, HereToo - WWU was performed at KCACTF Region 7 2020 for theatre students and faculty from all over the region. These performances were accompanied by a second Day of Action at the festival as well as a workshop discussing the process in which our show was created.
